A Marvel executive has urged fans of the popular X-Men ‘97 animated series to remain patient as work on Season 2 continues.
Season 1 of X-Men ‘97 concludes with several intriguing hints for the next season. Speaking to ComicBook, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, revealed that Season 2 is currently in the animatic stage.
“It’s still in the animatic phase. Animation takes a long time to produce, as I’m sure you know,” Winderbaum explained. “There was a great bit about this in Invincible Season 2. They nailed it perfectly. Animation takes a while, and studios often wait to see how successful the first season is before greenlighting the next. We were fortunate to get the green light before airing, so the delay might be shorter. People will just have to be patient with us.”
There is no release window yet for X-Men ‘97 Season 2, but the hope is to avoid a lengthy gap similar to what Invincible experienced between its first and second seasons. Invincible saw a more than two-year gap, exacerbated by the pandemic.
What is known, however, is the limited involvement of Beau DeMayo, the fired creator of X-Men ’97, in Season 2. Responding to fan questions following the Season 1 finale, DeMayo mentioned that while he wrote “a lot” of Season 2, he will not be heavily involved in its production.
